Opposites Attract

It was announced today that Cancer Kristen Bell and Capricorn Dax Shepard are going to be headed down the aisle. This is hardly a surprise, as opposites signs, like Cancer/Capricorn are wildly attracted to one another and make great couples.

Opposite signs are really very similar. They tend to have the same interests but it is their approach to things that is opposite. In the case of Cancer and Capricorn, both signs are very concerned with security and having a stable routine and lifestyle, but Cancer approaches this from a more nurturing homey perspective while Capricorn is more business minded.

Other famous opposite sign couples include sensitive sweeties Nicole Richie and Joel Madden (Virgo/Pisces) and that famous Sagittarius/Gemini phenomenon know as Brangelina.

Heidi Klum is not only an ubermodel,  ubermogul, and ubermother she is also an uber-Gemini: both her sun and her moon fall into the sign of the twins. And indeed Heidi is the ultimate Gemini: friendly, communicative, enterprising and very multifaceted.

Never one to cool her heels, fresh off the birth of her fourth child this fall (little Libra Lou Samuel), it has been announced that Heidi is coming out with not one but TWO maternity lines.. there goes the Gemini again, two is always better than one for those twins. One line is more glam oriented, the other is more casual. Fashion-wise, Geminis are the ultimate mix-and-matchers, dressing to suit their moods with quite an affinity for accessories. Heidi never seems to tire of new projects, and she loves it! Last year she told a magazine:

“I love the sense of spontaneity about my life and my job. Everyday is different and you just don’t know what to expect. I’m a Gemini so I get bored easily. We famously get bored very fast. We always have to keep ourselves on our feet and entertained. And I never have a dull moment between my modeling, hosting, producing, photos and commercials. If everything would be same, well that would not be any fun!”

“It’s like, yeah, I’m really going to go to a party with my cast and crew and all the executives at the network and dance on tables. [Tabloids] all want to make me out as this party girl, and I’m not. I’m underage! All I do is sit at home and play guitar. That’s seriously what I do. I’m a Leo. I’ve always been independent, and this is the lifestyle I have grown up with since I was 3.”

Good & Bad Virgo

In the great tradition of totally addictive programming, Bravo has been airing a show about uber-stylist Rachel Zoe, “The Rachel Zoe Project”. This fall, well after the end of their second season, it was announced that Taylor, Rachel’s #1 gal had left her job with the company. This news was not entirely unexpected as a major plotline for the entire series has been Taylor’s persistent threats to quit. And however passive-aggressive and bitchy Taylor’s behavior with her underling Brad might be, her threats aimed at Zoe were certainly warranted.

An accurate birthdate (or year anyway) for Zoe is up for debate. She is however most definitely a Virgo and she often refers to herself as a “triple Virgo”. Whether this is factually accurate or more metaphorical is unknown but she most certainly acts like a triple Virgo, exacerbating and exaggerating both the negative and positive sides of the sign.

On the positive side she is clearly extremely hard working, determined, loyal, service-oriented, discriminating, and detail saavy. No small detail of any of her styling jobs is overlooked.

However her biggest drawback seems to be that in her complete and utter adherence to the smallest most specific details about her styling job, she is totally unable to see the forest from the trees. She has moved on, or has been hoping to move on, from being one of the most successful and celebrated stylists working today into more entrepreneurial venures; becoming a tv star, starting a jewelry and clothing line, licensing her name for various other projects, in other words creating a brand. This involves an entirely different set of skills than styling, skills that Zoe has clearly struggled (in front of the camera) to master. In order to grow your company effectively you must have a strong, loyal team around you whom you clearly delegate to, trust and compensate fairly.

But in the Virgo tradition of being perfectionistic and self-reliant, Rachel Zoe seems to have no ability to delegate responsibilities to others and create a balanced and smooth working environment. She is literally trying to do everything by herself and when she can’t she leaves others in her wake confused and under-prepared to catch the rest of the slack (Who can forget the sight of Taylor- and her parents!!- packing up dozens of boxes on a Sunday because nobody scheduled an intern to do it). Zoe must have noticed at this point that those with much weaker brands and less power have managed to leverage their success into burgeoning empires much more effortlessly.

Health problems, specifically stomach problems, like she has been experiencing are also associated with Virgo, especially Virgos who are out of balance, as Zoe most definitely is. So Rachel, get well and delegate responsibilities to your new team!!

As we bid farewell to the year (and the decade).. I thought I would take a moment to celebrate the birthdays of the very long list of influential and iconic women in American culture who turned 40 in 2009. After all, 40 is the “new 30″, am I right ladies?!

Who could imagine the Oscar Red Carpet without Cate Blanchett, Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones or Jennifer Aniston?

How about the Grammys without Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey or Gwen Stefani?

Two of the most beloved female athletes of the past 20 years were also born in 1969- Nancy Kerrigan and Steffi Graf.

These woman have been phenomenally celebrated and phenomenally transformative to their fields.

Jennifer Lopez was famously the first Latina to get a million dollar paycheck for a film. She also broke boundaries in terms of proving that you could have your cake and eat it too- or more precisely that you could be a singer, dancer, actor, clothing designer, serial monogamist, fragrance maker, and producer simultaneously. Mariah Carey is one of the best selling female artists of all time  and Gwen Stefani also transformed the constrictive model of being a female singer by keeping her band together as well as having a thriving solo career, launching a style revolution and entrepreneurial empire.

Jennifer Aniston, meanwhile seems to be the slightly reluctant face of an entire 90s generation as they attempt to age gracefully and keep their yoga-toned bodies, eco-friendly lifestyle, and romantic comedy-ready lives set for the next chapter. And while Cate Blanchett, Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones embody more the style of the old-fashioned Hollywood stars, they have been embraced wholeheartedly by the public and the Academy alike.

So besides being born in 1969, what do these ladies have in common? Well it is precisely because they were born in 1969 that they have something in common- they were born during the epic Uranus/Jupiter/Pluto conjunction. This was one of the most- perhaps THE most- significant period in 20th century American history as the counter-culture revolution was crystallized and permanently changed the American way of life. It was the pinnacle of a time of rapid, radical, freedom-oriented change (Uranus), deep psychological reassessment of values and norms (Pluto) mixed with a good sized dash of courage, optimism and hope for the future (Jupiter). The landing of man on the moon took place in 1969.

So is it really not a surprise that women who have shaken up the norm, who have made such an indelible mark on the American public, were born during this spectacular conjunction. These women are humanitarian and  individualistic (Uranus), intense and dramatic (Pluto) and really lucky {as if we didn’t already know that!!} thanks to Jupiter. Other fabulous females who rang in their 40th this year were Anne Heche, Christy Turlington, Rachel Hunter, Ellen Pompeo, Julie Delpy, Julie Bowen and Chandra Wilson.

Saturn, the planet of restriction and realism, transited from Virgo into Libra on October 29 at 1:09 PM EST. Saturn’s shift from one sign to the next is always important but its movement into Libra hold special significance. This is an extremely important time for all of us, so pay special attention!

To begin with, Libra is the 1st sign of the second half of the zodiac. While the signs of first half of the zodiac (the signs Aries through Virgo) represent the personal world and personal experience, the second half of the zodiac (Libra through Pisces) represents the outer world. It begins with Libra, which appropriately represents balance- the balance between our personal experience and our place in the larger world, among other things. Thus, with Saturn bringing CONSEQUENCE, we will see during Saturn’s transit of Libra- which lasts until April 5, 2012- the consequences of our actions in the larger world. We will have to reassess and re-negotiate our relationships with others.

Secondly, Saturn was in Libra only July 4, 1776- the birthday of America. Thus for our country, this is a pivotal time, a Saturn return. The results and consequences of our policy and national behavior for the past 29 years, since the last time Saturn was in Libra, will make themselves manifest, for better or for worse.

Saturn is also in dignified in Libra. This is an ancient classification of planets who have an affinity for particular signs. This means that essentially Saturn really “likes” being in Libra- it can really exert its will effectively in that sign. Saturn has a particular enjoyment of its transit through Libra because Libra represents equality and justice and there is nothing that Saturn enjoys more than re-distribution based on merit. We can expect an awful lot of “justice” to be doled out in the coming years.

Finally, as Saturn crosses the cusp of Libra it activates the “Cardinal Cross” that is the marker of our coming years astrologically. The cusps of the four cardinal signs- Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn- are the most sensative energy point in the zodiac. Planets opposing or squaring one another along these lines have special potency. Pluto began this aspect as it crossed the Capricorn cusp last fall. With Saturn now in Libra squaring Pluto in Capricorn, the Cardinal cross is in effect. These planets are in hard aspect to a third planet, Uranus, which is now in late Pisces. When Uranus moves into Aries in May 2010, the cardinal cross will be at its most potent.

During the period of time in 2010 when Saturn is in early Libra, Uranus is in early Aries and Pluto is in early Capricorn, will be exceptionally important and transformative. When the moon or other planets cross over early Cancer during 2010, important events will be triggered.

It is the belief of many astrologers, including myself, that this cardinal cross is the epic astrological event that corresponds with the type of apocalyptic “2012″ scenario that is gaining momentum in our culture. A fundamental transformation of our way of life is under way. Our entire value system will be re-made (Libra loves a good make-over! Sorry to make a joke but it is all quite intense). So keep in mind… now is not the time for frivolity so if you want to make it through the Libra in Saturn and the cardinal cross intact it would be wise to keep your head down, work hard, be fair and truthful in all of your endeavors and live in accordance with your highest values.

With those goals in mind we can anticipate a very positive transformation. Pluto promises deep and meaningful change, and this could hopefully come in the reconciliations of the two opposites- Saturn (the rigid Western materialist view of the universe) and Uranus (the indefinable energy of innovation and synchronicity that is more associated with an intuitive integrated view of the universe). When more people in the world are able to see that these two views of life are not necessarily dichotomous but can, and indeed MUST, be reconciled, terrific advances in both consciousness and knowledge will follow.

youniverse_by_andycapI myself am well into my 20s, as are most of my close friends and confidantes. Like any time in ones life, the present, naturally, seems to assume the utmost importance. And just like when we were in our teens, and thought nobody could possibly understand us (and likely they didn’t), the 20s come with their own set of emotional trials and tribulations. These come in three distinct waves, astrologically speaking.

The Saturn return that takes place around ages 28/29 has garnered the most recognition in the collective consciousness. Like Mercury retrograde it seems to have the highest number of non-astrological pros murmuring about it’s significance. This would of course be characteristic of it’s namesake planet, Saturn, who garners, indeed demands, a great deal of serious consideration and respect. However, the earlier two astrologically significant events one encounters in their 20s are equally interesting and significant.

Around age 24, adults enjoy their second Jupiter return. The planet Jupiter takes roughly 12 years to make a full circle of the zodiac. This means that for every person, when they are about 12 years old, and then again at 24 (yet again at 36, 48, etc), transiting Jupiter returns to the same degree in the sky that it was at when you were born.

Jupiter is the planet of luck, abundance, extravagance, faith, optimism, education, journeys, teaching, publishing, broadcasting, gambling and speculation. This is interesting because at this juncture in many a young persons life they are taking, in many ways, the biggest gamble of their lives- deciding which career path they want to follow. This is a tidy follow up to ones first Jupiter return at age 12, when we are well enough along in our development to have established certain academic, as well as social, preferences. Like happy-go-lucky Jupiter, adults at age 24 set off with the highest of hopes, an innate faith and optimism about their chosen field and the future abundance of their life. Jupiter also represents opportunities and now is the time when we feel like the world is an open and exciting place for us. And much to the amusement of everybody else, the extravagance of those in their early 20s is often well broadcast for all to see! This is understandably a high point in many peoples life.

At age 27/28 we encounter the next interesting astrological event. The progressed moon returns to the sign and degree it was at the time our birth. Progressions are different from transits. The transit moon, with it’s rapid 28 day orbit of the zodiac, passes over our natal moon once each month. This is called the lunar return and many astrologers looks at it for information about the coming months emotional character. It takes at least 27 years, however, for the moon to make one full rotation in the progressed chart which shows the internal progress and changes we are experiencing in our lives. So while both the Jupiter and Saturn returns are transits, which affect us in a more public, exterior way, through circumstances and situations which reinforce its themes, the progressed lunar return is a much more subtle, private time of reassessment and reflection.

Again this suits the nature of the mysterious, private, nurturing, loving, giving, tender, moody moon quite well. During our progressed lunar return we really get in touch with our emotional nature. With the progressed moon in our natal moon sign for a little over 2 years, all of the emotional baggage and patterns that we have been carrying around with us seem to be put under the spotlight. For many this is a time when we are getting more serious about our relationships, even considering marriage. For those who have already married, it is a time when their own notions of love, caring and support are tested. We start to understand what we really need and want from a parter and how we tend to nurture other people, as well as ourselves.

These realizations, often discovered at a difficult price, will prove invaluable as we tread through the next astrological era at age 28/29, the Saturn return. Saturn takes roughly 29 years to make one full circles of the zodiac and it’s return to our place of birth at this time in our lives in crucial. We have had some opportunities (Jupiter) and have worked through some emotional baggage (moon) up to this point and it is now our task to turn a practical, disciplined eye to the issues of responsibility, reputation and commitment in our lives.

Saturn urges caution, realism and hard work. If one has been living in tune with these values, honing their craft with effort and integrity, Saturn can be a most generous and rewarding master, having the sole ability of the planets to manifest in material ways, all of our hopes and dreams. If ones path has been more meandering and less conscientious, Saturn provides a firm, but fair, reminder that there are rules in the game and they must be followed in order to achieve success. Saturn does not care, per se, what game you are playing, but rather that you are playing it with honor, integrity, and even love. While love is not a word much associated with Saturn, it should be! Saturn does not want you to be doing some ‘practical’ job that you hate. There is nothing practical, really, about that. Saturn wants you to do what you love, in a practical, responsible way. In fact, when you love what you do, Saturn only strengthens and reinforces your ability to do it well. And any good astrologer will tell you how vitally important Saturn is to a love relationship. It adds responsibility, durability, commitment and strength. Marriage, after all, is more than candles and bubble baths!

So while many find their patience, and their bank accounts, to be at a frustrating low during their Saturn returns, others find large bonuses and wedding rings in this melee. And even if your Saturn return is difficult (and parts of it are for almost everyone), that does not mean that you did something ‘wrong’ up to this point and don’t deserve to be rewarded, but rather that there may be something even better out there for you… something that will get you even closer to the material manifestation of your goals. So while it is important to be sensible during the Saturn return, it is also essential to remain flexible and open-minded; solutions will present themselves.

Each of these returns represents the tying up of loose ends as well as the beginning of a new era. For this reason they are high energy periods than can be experiences as both trying and cathartic. With the Jupiter return (24), we are celebrating the completion (for most people) of formal education and fostering optimism about the future. With the progressed lunar return (27), we are processing the conscious and subconscious emotional patterns we have been enacting in our lives, and making necessary adjustments. This is just in time for our new, hopefully more mature, emotional nature to guide us through our Saturn return (29); the time of assessing our progress and our short-comings, reaping our material rewards, and getting practical about our future.

But the good news is, that once all of this hard work is out of the way, we can really boogie down and enjoy our 30s! With no seriously daunting transits or progressions coming through.. this is the real time to enjoy the life we have chosen, climaxing in the 3rd Jupiter return at age 36. So while the 20s might not be the breeze that every angsty teenager imagines them to be, they hold the keys to a lot of important self- healing that can ensure that the rest of your early adult life is as satisfying as possible!

alyson_hannigan300

Add Aries Alyson Hannigan to the ranks of those who have given birth on their birthday! She celebrated her 35th birthday on March 24th by delivering her first child, daughter Satyana. According to some sources as many as 5% of newborns share their birthdays with their  mothers. When you consider that there are 365 days in a year this becomes quite a mind-boggling statistical anomaly! While astrologers (or anybody else) would certainly not be able to tell you HOW this happens, we can definitely explain why this bond is so strong.

People born on the same day (or sometimes within one day) of one another, even in different years, share the same degree of birth. Alyson and her daughter were both born at 3 degrees Aries. So when planets make an aspect to 3 degrees Aries (like Pluto over there at 3 degrees Capricorn) it affects both of them very similarly. So from the moons cycles every month, to the longer outer planet transits, both people experience the ebbs and flows of this energy together. So the bond between mothers and children born on the same day is generally a very strong one.

I have also noticed a lot of mothers giving birth to children whose natal sun is conjunct their progressed sun. For example, when Scorpio Julia Roberts gave birth to her twins on November 28, 2004, they were born at 6 degrees Sagittarius, within several degrees of Roberts progressed sun at 11 degrees Sagittarius. Capricorn Amanda Peet’s progressed sun was at 26 degrees Aquarius when she gave birth to her daughter, Frankie, who was born at 0 degrees Pisces. These conjuncts are not exact but they are still very close and while to the naked eye they are not as significant as sharing the same actual birth date as a parent, astrologically they are very similar in that they strengthen emotional bonds because passing transits affect them both very closely.

pisces-1

Dear Pisces,

Well it has been an interesting few years hasn’t it, dear Pisces? You have kind of been going through the ringer with obstacles over here, indecision over there, and a prevailing wind of chaos in your life. Just when you may be ready to throw up your hands and (mistakenly) accept that this is your lot in life.. I come with good news!

First of all, this is not your lot in life. It has been a very stressful drawn out opposition between rebellious Uranus in your sign and stern Saturn opposite your sign in Virgo doling out the ‘big life lessons’. But it is finally wrapping up and will be moving on to ‘bless’ those in the next pair of opposite signs- Aries & Libra- with its wisdom soon enough. Especially for those of you born at the beginning of Pisces, break out the champagne because the drama is all but over. Those of you born closer to the end, there will still be some more of the same but you will be feeling a WHOLE lot better as you confront it. You are practically a pro by now.

Secondly, you have a year ahead so stellar in aspects that even those bossy Leos would be jealous. In fact, your new moon this year falls in the house presided over by that most self-confident of signs, Leo, the 5th house- which also has rulership over love affairs, fun, personal creative pursuits, romance, parties, games and children. YAY! You are a deeply creative person, Pisces, and part of your struggle recently has been how to make that fit with the greater career world and sometimes it felt like jamming a square peg into a round hole. This year, you will discover with no small amount of delight, that by simply doing your own thing and paying absolutely no heed (or almost no heed) to what anyone else thinks or wants you will not only be a wellspring of creative momentum, but also that others will practically be falling all over themselves to help you.

You are aided in this by Libra on your ascendant this year, making you beautiful, sociable and pleasant to be around. Your social life is all but destined to be kicked up a notch this year and you will meet plenty of interesting new people. Venus in Aries, in your 7th house of relationships (the house ruled by Libra) is also another strong indicator that while you are feeling as confident and self-directed as ever (5th house sun and moon) you are easily able to balance this with your desire for harmony in your personal relationships. It seems partnerships will in fact be important in helping you with your goals, but these partnerships and relationships will come to you, you will not have to struggle and seek them out.

Powerful Pluto in your 3rd house of communication indicates a time when you are truly becoming aware of your personal perspective. In fact, combined with the strong Leo influence, that could really be described as the big story for you this year. As a Pisces you see beauty and inspiration in so many things that at times it has been difficult for you to distill your unique vision. This year, you will not only be able to put your finger on the pulse of it.. but to share this with others clearly and to find the right home and audience for your talents.

Home is another interesting word this year. You will certainly find a “home” for your work and perspective. The conjunction of Mars, Mercury and Jupiter in Aquarius straddles your 4th and 5th house cusps- the 4th house being the house of home and family. Cancer- the sign associated with the 4th house- is also ruling your career sector. The truth is that this is actually a rather private time for you. All of your planets this year, save Venus and Saturn, fall below the horizon indicating an emphasis on yourself, so while you will be finding your place in the grander scheme of things- that will almost be incidental. Focus on yourself now, which for you ever generous, ever sympathetic Pisces is quite a more difficult prescription than it seems! Don’t let the exciting sociable Libra aspects suck you in too deeply, balance them with some time spent reflectively and play your career cards rather close to the vest, even though exciting things are happening.

You may have already guessed it but with Libra on the ascendant, the sun and moon in the 5th house of romance and true love, and sexy Venus in the 7th house of partnerships… Love is in the air. If this is an area of life that has been suffering the turbulence of the Saturn/Uranus opposition, then you may have a fresh breath of air to look forward to here. Venus in Aries is feisty and changeable though so while it will probably not be all be poetry and candles on the beach it is sure to be an exciting adventure.  It could be an Aries, Aquarius, Libra or Leo who catches your eye (or some of each!). If you are committed already, the 5th house emphasis could bring out some discussions about expanding the family or even a visit from the stork.

Of course no Pisces discussion would be complete without paying a wee bit of attention to the troublesome Uranus/Saturn opposition which this year falls in your 6th (Uranus) and 12th (Saturn) houses. Saturn in the 12th is reminding you to integrate fully all of the things that you have been learning throughout the past few years and when used constructively can help you with all of that articulation of your vision that we have been discussing. Uranus in the 6th is helping you pay better attention to your health (again, part of the whole taking care of yourself thing). You may have some surprises in that area this year but just take them as a sign to find a routine that you are truly able to maintain.

So bottom line.. enough with the bleeding heart BS Pisces!! Now is the time for you and don’t let anyone or anything sway you from taking care of yourself and tending to your goals. You will be more clear than ever about what those goals are and people will notice. So keep doing your thing, make sure your home life and relationships {personal and professional} are happy and harmonious, and embrace a time of personal creative satisfaction and fun.

LUCKIEST MONTHS:

APRIL 2009: Your social life is buzzing and you could meet some very interesting people right now. Don’t expect a lot from the get go but certainly get yourself out of the house and enjoy some good times.

JULY 2009: A career breakthrough is sure to happen this month. Be a good listener and feel out the situation. There will be room for you to put your stamp on it later.

OCTOBER 2009: Some of your projects will finally be coming to fruition. Take pride in your accomplishments and share your happiness with everyone else in your life.

JANUARY 2010: Any type of real estate related venture that you have been pursuing will be highlighted this month so move forward with confidence.
